Bengali Alphabet / বাংলা বর্ণমালা

The Bengali alphabet is a syllabic alphabet derived from the Brahmi script.
বাংলা বর্ণমালা হল ব্রাহ্মী লিপি থেকে উদ্ভূত একটি সিলেবিক বর্ণমালা।

It is used to write the Bengali language, which is spoken by over 265 million people in Bangladesh, India, and other parts of the world.
এটি বাংলা ভাষা লিখতে ব্যবহৃত হয়, যা বাংলাদেশ, ভারত এবং বিশ্বের অন্যান্য অংশে 265 মিলিয়নেরও বেশি মানুষ কথা বলে।

The Bengali alphabet has 50 letters, of which 11 are vowels and 39 are consonants.
বাংলা বর্ণমালায় 50টি অক্ষর রয়েছে, যার মধ্যে 11টি স্বরবর্ণ এবং 39টি ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ।

The vowels are written as independent letters, while the consonants are written with a vowel diacritic.
স্বরবর্ণগুলি স্বাধীন অক্ষর হিসাবে লেখা হয়, যখন ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণগুলি একটি স্বরবর্ণ ডায়াক্রিটিক দিয়ে লেখা হয়।

The vowel diacritics can be placed above, below, or after the consonant.
স্বরবর্ণের ডায়াক্রিটিকগুলি ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণের উপরে, নীচে বা পরে স্থাপন করা যেতে পারে।

Vowels (স্বরবর্ণ)

There are 11 Vowels.

অ, আ, ই, ঈ, উ, ঊ, ঋ, এ, ঐ, ও, ঔ

Vowels can found at the beginning, at the end, and in the middle of the word.

Consonants (ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ)

There are 39 Consonants.

ক, খ, গ, ঘ, ঙ, চ, ছ, জ, ঝ,

ঞ, ট, ঠ, ড, ঢ, ণ, ত, থ, দ,

ধ, ন, প, ফ, ব, ভ, ম, য, র,

ল, শ, ষ, স, হ, ড়, ঢ়, য়, ৎ, ং, ঃ, ঁ

Consonants can found at the beginning, at the end, and in the middle of the word.

Numbers (সংখ্যা)

০, ১, ২, ৩, ৪, ৫, ৬, ৭, ৮, ৯

Bengali numerals have no horizontal headstroke (মাত্রা or matra)

Bengali is a language that can be spoken in various ways depending on the location.
বাংলা এমন একটি ভাষা যা অবস্থানের উপর নির্ভর করে বিভিন্ন উপায়ে বলা যায়।
Bangla emon akti bhasha ja obosthaner upor nirvor kore bibhirnno upaye bola jaai।

It's not uncommon to hear the same sentence pronounced differently in different places.
একই বাক্য বিভিন্ন জায়গায় ভিন্নভাবে উচ্চারিত হওয়া অস্বাভাবিক নয়।
Aki bakko bibhirnno jaigai bhirnnobhabe uchaarito howa osabhabik noy।

Moreover, a word in Bengali can have two different pronunciations.
তাছাড়া বাংলায় একটি শব্দের দুটি ভিন্ন উচ্চারণ থাকতে পারে।
Tachara banglai ekti sobder duti bhirnno uchaaron thakte pare।

যেমন- Jemon- ( for example )

আমি গতকাল গিয়েছিলাম, ( Ami Gotokal Giyechilam )
আমি কালকে গিয়েছিলাম, ( Ami kalke Giyechilam )

This sentence is called in English ( I want yesterday )

The sentance are the same but the sentace are different. The same word can be said in two ways.
বাক্য একই কিন্তু বাক্য ভিন্ন। একই কথা দুইভাবে বলা যায়।
Bakko eki kintu bakko bhirnno। aki kotha dubhabe bola jai।
